Quote from: The Light Side by Bob Lochner in today's Oregoninan
"[Liz] Robbins concluded: "Cheeks' defining act in Portland showed his class and provided the Blazers with a prideful image. Before a home playoff game in the first round against the Dallas Mavericks in April 2003, Natalie Gilbert, 13, forgot the words while singing the national anthem. Cheeks walked onto the court, whispered the words, then sang with Natalie, encouraging the crowd to join in for a touching moment replayed throughout the country.
"The Blazers' job description for the next coach is not likely to ask for a singing voice.
"Reflecting on his national anthem save, Cheeks said after the moment, 'I wish I could help some of my players like that.' Wednesday, it seemed like a fitting epitaph to his time in Portland."

Cory says:
Trailblazers: My favorite b-ball team makes another poor decision. In the last 10 years they seem to me to be making one bad decision after another. The Jail-blazers baffle me.
All the bad personalities (read "criminals") they've hired over the years and sending away the class acts like Mo and Brain Grant a few years ago. What are they thinking?
Bob Lochner in the rest of his article writes that Mo will have plenty of opportunities in the NBA because he is well respected as a coach. The rest of the NBA according to him are shaking their heads at the Blazers. Why don't the Blazers see that?
"I think Maurice was well-liked," Abdur-Rahim(player) said. "I think guys are going to miss him. Even the guys who don't think they'll miss him will look back and miss him. A lot of his problems stemmed from things he couldn't control. He had to try to get guys to buy into roles that he felt he had to make them play."
"He helped me get to where I am today," [Zach] Randolph said. "That's all I'm going to say right now."
