You Can Memorize – Whole Books of the Bible
I have been memorizing Scripture (on and off) since I was knee high to a grasshopper.
About five years ago I started using a method of memorizing long passages and even books of the Bible.
In 15 minutes a day you can memorize whole books of the Bible.
My friend Pete Slocum and I memorized the book of James and the Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7). Now I am working on Col 3, my favorite chapter of the Bible.
The method I use is fairly by rote. It is repeating the verses out loud a certain number of times every day. But if used properly it can be spiritually meditative.
Meditate on God’s truth recorded in the Scriptures. Focus on what He is saying to you.
The Method:
Day One: Read verse 1 – twenty-five times.
Day Two: Read verses 1 & 2 - twenty times. Read verse two - five times.
Day Three: Read verses 1, 2, & 3 - fifteen times. Read verses 2 & 3 - five times. Read verse 3 – five times.
Day Four: Read verses 1, 2, 3, & 4 – ten times. Read 2, 3, & 4 – five times. Read 3 & 4 – five times.
Day Five: Read verses 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 – five times. Read 2, 3, 4, & 5 – five times. Read 3, 4, & 5 – five times. Read 4 & 5 – five times. Read 5 – five times.
Day Six: Read verses 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 – five times. Read 3, 4, 5, & 6 – five times. Read 4, 5, & 6 – five times. Read 5 & 6 – five times. Read 6 – five times.

As you can see, work in groups of five. Five verses which you read five times. Resulting in reading new verses 25 times on Day One and five times on Day Five.

Zane (age 7): A tackling word. It's like 'Oh Yeah'.
Luke (age 5): Seems like he always says don't get out of bed.
Cade (age 3): Go in yours room.
2. What makes dad happy?
Zane: To squish us.
Luke: Me.
Cade: Me hugging him.
3. What makes dad sad?
Zane: To kill us.
Luke: If I burned all of the Pepsi.
Cade: Me no hugging him.
4. How does your dad make you laugh?
Zane: Tickling us.
Luke: When he tickles me.

5. What was your dad like as a child?
Zane: Indian.
Luke: Me.
Cade: Bars. 'Cause us love bars. [Granola bars]

Zane: What is it again?
Luke: How old? 45?
Cade: Me think 5-8.

Zane: I have no idea.
Luke: I don't know.

Zane: Go on bike rides.

25 Random Things, Facts, Habits, or Goals about you [Facebook thing]
1. Two of my sons were born in the same hospital as me (Sacred Heart in Eugene).
2. I have an amazing family. Married 15 1/2 years to an incredible wife. I look forward to the amazing adventures ahead with my three boys and wife.
3. I collect … house plans, maps, rootbeer bottles, books, …
4. I love the outdoors – cycling, hiking, backpacking, walking, nature photography, drives in the country & mountains, and native plant landscaping.
5. Related to #3 I love being on the water – boating & rafting – someday I want to learn to river kayak and in retirement I hope to live on a boat with my wife for at least a year.
6. I played football, basketball, baseball, and competed in wrestling, cross country and track in MS & HS. In college, I joined a city league soccer team for a season. I enjoyed track the most but still love a good game of basketball and am hoping my boys will grow to enjoy basketball, so we will can have a short man’s 3-on-3 team some day.
7. I have had 22 jobs. Every one I have learned valuable life lessons. Some of the more interesting occupations: 11 years as a full-time minister (Associate Minister & Youth Minister). Ranchhand/cowboy on a 30,000 acre cattle ranch. I was a “barista” before that term was cool [I think I made it cool]. One summer, while attending the UofO I worked at Crater Lake, in the gift shop. Currently, I am working towards being a homebuilder.
8. Lori and I would like to own a small town Mercantile, B&B, or Diner/Cafe later in life.
9. I want to own a small ranch/farm.
10. I would like to do photography professionally. [Not like weddings and studio stuff … nature and sports photography.]
11. I am an entrepreneur [at least in my head]. New business ideas/plans flow thru my mind weekly and this has been going on for years.
12. I really enjoy teaching and preaching – even though it stresses me out.
13. I am an introvert and enjoy being alone. Personality= ISTP – [famous ISTPS = Spiderman, Q, Leonardo da Vinci, Fred Dalton Thompson, James Dean, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds.]
14. Mexican food, I could eat it everyday.
15. Cookies are my favorite dessert – there is not such thing as a bad cookie. Tillamook Peanut Butter Chocolate ice cream and rootbeer floats are also good. Rootbeer - I have tried over 30 different kinds of rootbeer.
16. Trains, plains, and automobiles (and boats) – I like to travel. Some day I will take my family on an extended US driving tour. I hope to visit the Holy Lands, Scotland, Alaska, Mexico, …
17. I love music – all kinds, especially live music.
18. I like quality shoes.
19. I have a thing for hair. When I was younger I had quite long hair - I liked the way the wind felt in my hair. I love it when my wife plays with my hair. Since college, I have almost continuously had facial hair – i.e. full beard, long mustache, goatee, or soul patch. [Does that help Shirley?]
20. I love OREGON – the mountains, the forests, the high desert, the rivers, the lakes, the beach, and the history.

22. I enjoy reading. Bible, novels, history, business, theology, self-help, nutrition & exercise, and magazines.
23. I am addicted to the Internet. I would be lost without all the information at my fingertips.
24. I am ultra-conservative in the realms of politics and religion. At the same time I can appreciate other people's views and try to understand the presuppositions that got them to their views.

Pandora Internet Music Genome
Music lovers ... Pandora is the coolest internet site!
Check it out, you can choose any genre or any artist and listen to them for free! And then you can create your own stations which play music by your favorite artists and artists similar to your favorites. Any artists which you don't like you can remove from your station. It is very simple to use. If you love music check it out.

Christmas Letter 08
December 2008
Dear Friends & Family,
You may remember that last year Cory went to work for a friend in the construction industry. This spring he became a General Contractor
and started GANT Construction. Cory has wanted for many years to have his own business and, so far, it is going very well. He and his former employer work together to do home repairs, remodels & real estate clean-ups. Once the economy improves they plan to get back into new construction.
On June 12th Cory and I celebrated our fifteenth wedding anniversary! We went to Belknap Springs on the McKenzie River for one night while my family watched the boys. We are thankful to God for blessing our marriage & pray He will continue to teach us how to love each other better.
Now that the boys are a little older we have been able to enjoy camping again. This summer we went on four great trips: two with my parents (Olallie Lake and Clear Lake) and two with Cory’s mom and step-dad (Diamond Lake and Detroit Lake). We all had a great time! The boys love playing outside and fishing. They each caught their first fish. Cade was by far the most excited. I think anyone on Clear Lake at the time could have heard him yelling, “ Me caught a fish! Me caught a fish!” At the end of the summer we bought a vintage camp trailer. It is a 13 foot 1955 Siesta. We were able to take it with us to Detroit Lake and really enjoyed it. We’re looking forward to more camping adventures.
Zane (6) is in first grade this year and is doing well. He doesn’t always like school, but he does his best and I’m proud of him. I have continued
to teach him at home and hope to do so through third grade. First grade requires much more time than Kindergarten did, but we are adjusting. The biggest challenge is keeping the younger two boys out of trouble while I am working with Zane.
Luke (5) is a fun little boy. His laugh is infectious. He spends a lot of his time upside down doing head stands. At times, he does this without his hands and even tries to spin. It looks like some sort of break-dance move, but I just worry he is going to break his neck. Being that Zane is occupied doing schoolwork for part of the day, Luke has had to learn to be the activities director. He is use to having Zane tell him what they
are going to play, but now he is learning to tell Cade what to do.
Cade (3) is a smiley little boy and also very tough. When he falls down, he will jump up and say, “Me okay!” or he may just growl like the pain frustrates him. He has the cutest way of talking that I wish I could describe. He is so much fun to listen to and be around.
The boys recently memorized John 14:27 and it seems like a good verse to share, especially considering our current economic state. Jesus said to His disciples, “I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”
We hope and pray that Christmas and the coming year will be a blessing for you and yours.

Favorite Restaurants
Lori and I had a conversation the other day about our favorite restaurants. We agree on most, but it gave me the idea to make a list. The list will not be in order, because my favorite might change day-to-day by cravings.
My favorite restaurants list:
1. Chappala Resturant #2 - Boise, ID - Mexican
2. Ixtapa - Veneta, OR - Mexican
3. Don Juans - Santa Clara, OR - Mexican
4. Burrito Boy - Eugene, OR - Mexican
5. The Jail - Eugene, OR - Terryaki Chicken & Rice box-lunch style
6. Burrito Amigo - Eugene, OR - Mexican
7. Chef's Hut - Boise, ID - Best Biscuits & Gravy
8. Cheesecake Factory - Seattle, WA - Mexican dinner & dessert
9. Takoda's - Rainbow, OR - upscale diner with nice atmosphere on McKenzie R.
10. Applebee's - upscale diner chain
11. Red Robin - Hamburger chain, its hard to beat the Royal Red Robin Burger!
12. Tommy's Diner - McMinnville, OR - best hamburger=barnyard burger/biscuits & gravy

Lori & I enjoy eating out and have started a restaurant guide with a rating system which rates restaurants on atmosphere, location, building, seating, service, menu, cleanliness, bathrooms, parking, price, etc. We mostly work on it while on vacation when away from the boys, therefore we have only officially rated three restaurants, but it is fun to do together.
We have considered the possibility of later-in-life (post-boys-at-home) running a cafe/diner together. I have for a long time had a dream of a sports-themed restaurant with large-screened TVs to watch the big games.
